On my journey to Kenya, I smartly planned an 11-hour layover
in Amsterdam. Best decision ever…it was like a super mini-vacation before
beginning my internship with the EAC. My friend, JW, was available to meet me
during my layover so we could frolic in Amsterdam! Our day began with hot cocoa
(for me) from the Starbucks at the airport. So very very Dutch of me haha!
After a quick train ride (complete with baby
diarrhea-colored seats) to Amsterdam Centraal, I had officially returned to my
favorite city! Okay, so quick side note: the weather was absolutely beautiful
on this day. The sun was shining, there was a cool breeze, and every single
café in sight had outdoor seating to enjoy this perfect day. So, naturally, we
went on a makeshift barcrawl. I really enjoyed sitting outside while
overlooking one of Amsterdam’s canals and drinking some white beer thing that
JW made me try. And by ‘made me’ I mean that I couldn’t decide what to order so
I just got the same thing haha!
Paddleboats were next on the list of things to-do! Because,
obviously, after you drink then you should go on a boat. JW has never been out
on the canals before (whaaaaaat?!), and the first time I went to Amsterdam
years ago was when I went paddle boating in the canals. So, it was a must-do.
Thankfully, our boat was kinda wacky and wouldn’t allow someone to sit in the
front right corner without the boat taking on water, sooooo I got to enjoy the
canals from the back seat of the paddleboat without having to pedal (see
picture)!
Before heading back to the airport, JW and I had the most
random dinner with an assortment of different foods (see picture). Anddd…it was
perfect…because I finally got my Dutch fries and bitterbollen! Back at the
airport, I prepared for my longest leg of the trip by enjoying a few beers with
two Scottish guys that I met. After this busy day…I fell asleep before the
plane even took off towards Nairobi, Kenya!
SHOUT OUT TO JW AND HIS FIRST SELFIE EVER!!! (See the
picture above!)

HI J'dubs!! WE MISS YOU! The little get-together looks like it was alot of fun! Why IS it that JW always ends up being the one that has to pedal??? (ie. Chicago??!!) haha
ReplyDeleteThe food looks yummy and makes me miss Amsterdam, tooooo!!!!
Maybe another trip is in MY future?? ;-D
It was so much fun! And so great to really catch up again after way too long, Hope our next encounter will be super soon.
ReplyDeleteMan, oh man. This post makes me miss Amsterdam! Also, watching The Fault in Our Stars this weekend makes me miss Amsterdam. I'm happy you planned your layover so you could reminisce in your favorite place with an old friend.
ReplyDeleteI think we need to plan a trip to the Netherlands very soon....or, maybe, a move....just saying.
